The Tell-Tale Scare-Crow

Ok...the moment has arrived....the moment you all have been waiting for!

Drum roll please...

And the name of our nameless scarecrow is..............Sk-Edgar Allen Crow!

Congratulations to Anthony who is the winner of......  $1,000,000 Monopoly Dollars, a NO EXPENSES PAID vacation for two to Hawaii...AND a basket of veggies and farm fresh eggs!!!!

Our judges had a really tough time with all of the amazingly creative names that came along!  We appreciate all those who participated!

Although all the names were GREAT, the names that were most in contention for first place were...

  • Kavi - meaning "wise one" in Cherokee - entered by our very own market manager, Cindy Pritchard!
  • P.o.R.C. Chop - entered by Jennifer R. - love the farm plug!
  • Clementine - because why shouldn't the scarecrow be a girl? - entered by Kiska Kitty  :)
  • Mon-scare-to - get it?  Like "Monsanto"?  - pretty darn clever Miss Liza!
Hats off to all of our many creative and inspiring entries!

So, as you drive along Colham Ferry Road make sure to honk as you go by our tell-tale scarecrow Mr. Sk-Edgar Allen Crow!

A note on our markets this week....

Due to the heavy rains and very little sunshine our garden is limping along lately.  Although we still have mighty tasty veggies - we just don't have as much.  While our veggies do not love the rain, our cows and grasses do which means grass fed beef may be coming sooner than anticipated!!  But that's all I will say about it for now.  :)

As for our markets this week...

We will NOT be making to today's Oconee Farmer's Market, 4-7 pm downtown Watkinsville.

John WILL be at the Central Bishop Market on Thursday 4-7 pm - downtown Bishop

Will WILL be at the Oconee Farmers Market on Saturday, 8 am- 1 pm, downtown Wat-town.

Hope to see you all later this week!

Funion with Punions...

Is it Monday already?  Wow.  Well this Monday, I am feeling less than inspi-ring...pungent is how I might describe it. It may just bring tears to your eyes.

Hmmmm...now what is the veggie this week?  Read between the punny layers and you may come to the root of it....

A-peeling Allium

Did you get it?  Or is it still too early in the week for punions?  Alright - I'll give it to you....

The veggie of the week is ONIONS!!  And not just any ol' bloomin' onion - a small delicately flavored, yellow Spanish onion.

It's so delicate and slightly sweet...almost lush... you can eat it raw without that sharp bite most onions carry....so delicate that you may not even cry when you cut into it - truly!  And the best part - it comes with the greens that can be used as scallions (our fave is to fry 'em up in bacon fat!  yum, yum!)

And onions have a multitude of health benefits....

and because there are just so many benefits I am sending you all a link enumerating and expanding on all the many, many advantages to that age old adage..."An onion a day keeps the doctor away..."

a recipe.

A simple & refreshing cucumber-onion salad

All you need....
  • cucumbers
  • onion
  • balsamic  (try the delicious balsamic from The Granary...even comes in a re-useable-refillable bottle!)
  • sesame seed oil

The method...
  • Slice up the cucumber and onions - toss together
  • Add balsamic to taste
  • Add a dash of sesame oil
